Alpine Gray – New fertility genetic indexes available

Under the Dual Breeding project, new genetic indices for traits related to animal welfare were developed for the Grigio Alpina breed: these are the genetic indices for fertility.

The indices for fertility refer to the length of calving-conception interval (PC) and the length of interpartum (IP) . Both indices for fertility provide information on the ability of each cow to be fertile, that is, to conceive in the shortest possible time after calving. Because of the low heritability of these traits, great caremust be taken with the accuracy of indices in the eventual selection of breeding stock. The new genetic indices are expressed as a standardized value with mean 100 and deviation 12. Indices above 100 improve character.

The genetic indices are published together with a brief descriptive report in the section Services – PSRN 10.2 Breeding Values. and can be accessed for all approved sires with index accuracy of at least 80 percent. The breeding values of females are published directly in the mating plans made available to breeders in the login area through restricted access.
